William Shatner Praises Ethereum and Defends Vitalik Buterin in Epic Pro-Crypto Tweetstorm

Previous generations may remember him as Captain Kirk from Star Trek, newer generations may recognize him as the guy in the Priceline commercials, newest generations may know William Shatner for his recent Ethereum-loving, cryptocurrency-supporting tweetstorm.

Starting November 6th, Shatner took to Twitter to give Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin and seemingly innocuous “thumbs up.”

@VitalikButerin ??

This set off a wave of responses, including pushback from a user named “premine apologist” calling Buterin a “literal scammer” and questioning Ethereum’s ability to be decentralized.

Shatner came to Buterin’s defense, tweeting,

Then as a coder – go develop your own blockchain technology where you can be 1000% sure of decentralization. Or shove money in a mattress. I hear that’s only overseen by the bed bug community. ?

When the user came back and called Buterin “dangerous,” Shatner answered,

His viewpoints don’t take into account the fact that the code has to be audited by an auditing firm and approved by consortium or it doesn’t get accepted. ? He thinks it exists in a bubble. That’s why we have ERC-20, ERC-721… ERC-1701?

Shatner’s knowledge and understanding of Ethereum and blockchain technology has shocked many crypto fans across the platform, earning many “welcome” tweets from the community.

OMG William Shatner is listing ERC standards in order to school a crypto troll.

This is the greatest timeline and you, sir, are the greatest self-aware actor of our age! pic.twitter.com/Ab69vmaLmi

Shatner also responded to another fan impressed with his coin knowledge.

? No. If you start at what’s the difference between Bitcoin & Ethereum and then fall down the crypto kitty/lambo/whatever rabbit hole you eventually get to the realization they are teaching tools for smart contracts. Protocols are just the next step after that. Just basics. https://t.co/Ni8JmCxU18

Shatner was sure to include his trademark witty humor, at one point busting out some crypto poetry to school a tweeter.

Hey Sporto I’m Crypto-hip I’m just HODLing back from calling you out but if you have a FUD about your FOMO, don’t worry you’ll just end up as a bagholder. ? https://t.co/wtSPIIUUVh

I’ve learned the basics and I’m a quick study and have friends who know exponentially more than I do. https://t.co/72RlgD4yrm

While this is the most concentrated number of crypto-related tweets from the Hollywood star, this isn’t the first time Shatner has mentioned crypto.

Last year, he publicly endorsed token sales and in June he announced that he would represent Solar Alliance, a Bitcoin mining facility in Illinois powered by solar energy.
