Coffee Goliath Starbucks Adopting Blockchain Technology to Track Supply

Starbucks is now using a blockchain-based platform that allows customers of its US stores to know where their beans came from.

The Microsoft-powered app lets coffee lovers scan codes on coffee bags to track their origin. Farmers can also use a reverse code so they can follow their produce along the supply chain.

Just launched: Meet the people and see the places behind your bag of Starbucks coffee with our new Digital Traceability tool. Simply scan or enter the batch code of any bag of whole bean coffee from U.S. stores to get started: https://t.co/ihvA0Emxyb

“Explore the journey that your Starbucks roasted coffee has taken and learn more about the people and the places that made it possible. Scan the code on the back of a bag of coffee from your local Starbucks cafe to unlock the stories behind it.”

This isn’t the first app to track the path of coffee. Supply chain technology provider Farmer Connect introduced an IBM Blockchain-powered tool earlier this year to improve traceability and fairness in the coffee supply chain.

Major partners of Farmer Connect’s Thank My Farmer platform include some of the world’s leading coffee organizations, such as The Colombian Coffee Growers Federation (FNC), Beyers Koffie, ITOCHU Corporation, Jacobs Douwe Egberts (JDE) and The J.M. Smuckers Company.
